Mission 8: Robotics Facility

Hey Gamers! I am back at it playing through the classic PC Star Wars game Dark Forces.

The quest to find more about the Dark Trooper project continues as Kyle is dispatched to a Robotics Facility on the ice planet of Anteevy. The mission in front of him is to set three charges in the facility to blow-up the factory and set back the Imperial Dark Trooper Project. Jan drops you off in the icy cliffs that surround the facility as you try to find a way to infiltrate the robotics factory. After surveying the perimeter and taking out a few Stormtrooper patrols you find a way into the factory via a conveyor belt.. Once in side there are a few hallways with conveyors and opportunities to fall into this weird brown peanut butter looking substance that burns the flesh. It looks like some kind of battery acid or industrial byproduct of building droids in this factory. Kyle makes his way through the factory and turns off a turbine to get into the bowels of the factory.

Now inside this is where he needs to set the charges to demolish the gears of the Imperial war machine. When I first dropped into this section of the plant I did not realize there was a poison gas in the air that was quickly draining my life. I threw on the gas mask just before the health indicator hit zero and started placing charges. Another fun surprise in this part of the factory is after placing the third charge a wall drops and unleashes a fully functional Dark Trooper on you..

At first sight of this big baddie I went into total panic mode shooting and running and running and shooting. Several swears where uttered as this Dark Trooper blasted me to space dust. So I retried, then died. Then retried, then died. Then finally, I retried and died again. That is when I realized I was playing a classic game and classic games have a finite number of lives. I exhausted all my lives then had to start over.

That weird acidic peanut butter sauce

I knew I was near the end of the level and getting clobbered so close to the end was so discouraging. This feeling of discouragement was followed up by rage which resulted in a rage quit. So at this time I have not beaten the level, but I thought I would write this blog to highlight the difficulty of classic gaming. I promise you readers and more importantly myself I will get back into that world and take down that Dark Trooper.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post and like always stay safe out there gamers.

NOTE: I went back today and beat the mission! I used a gajillion rockets on that sucker and downed that Dark Trooper. The second one in the ventilation shaft I ran away from and escaped the facility. I was met with a satisfying cutscene of a large explosion as I flew away in the Moldy Crow.
